IEEE 1547 sets the interconnection and interoperability requirements for distributed energy resources up to 10 MVA at the point of common coupling. A PV interconnection package that fails to conform is the engineering defect a solar-active electrical shop is underwritten against.

Because the GL form carries a professional-services exclusion, commonly ISO CG 22 79. The design-build-oriented CG 22 80 is the limited version: it preserves the insured's own design-build work but still leaves economic-loss design claims outside the GL grant. Once a claim traces to the engineering rather than the install, the form steps out. An undersized service, a rejected PV spec, or a wrong arc-flash study is a financial loss with no property damage to trigger it. Electrician design E&O is written for that exposure.
Usually not much. If you install strictly to a licensed engineer's stamped design and take no design responsibility, the engineering duty and its exposure stay with that engineer, and your general liability plus workers comp handle the install. The moment you take delegated design, run your own NEC Article 220 load calcs, or lay out PV and interconnection in-house, you assume a professional duty the GL policy excludes. Design E&O becomes the coverage that responds.
Yes, when the defect is in the design rather than the install. PV array sizing, string configuration, and the utility interconnection package under IEEE 1547 are engineering work. If the utility rejects the interconnection or the system fails commissioning because the design was wrong, that is economic loss with no property damage. General liability excludes it. It depends on what went wrong. Calculating incident energy under IEEE 1584 and setting NFPA 70E labels is professional engineering, so a study that understates energy or mislabels a boundary is a design error on E&O. If a worker is then burned relying on that label, the bodily injury itself is a workers comp or general liability matter, while the flawed study behind it remains the professional exposure design E&O was written to defend.
Because the coverage is claims-made, it only reaches designs delivered after the retroactive date it names. An electrical design defect, an undersized feeder or a bad interconnection spec, can surface years after the system is energized. If a carrier switch resets the date forward, every design already installed goes uninsured despite premium paid each year. Protect it through prior-acts coverage, and buy a tail when the shop sells or closes so booked designs stay defended.
